Somewhere/Elsewhere is a continuation of the artist book Parallel Planes. It further explores the notion of lines and borders within the urban landscape. The unique structure of this book leads the viewer into a journey where they can navigate city streets through a series of photographs of textured architectural planes that coexist side by side. Each page acts like a layer that can be peeled back or overlapped, allowing the viewer to interact and construct their own visual landscape within an infinite amount of possible compositions. (There is no specific direction or order in which the book should be viewed, drawing a parallel with the abstract notion of constructed identity and displacement.)

PARALLEL PLANES , 2022
Rhea Karam’s PARALLEL PLANES explores the forms, colors, and textures found in the architecture of New York City. The title is a nod to the symbolism of urban living, where people live side by side in great density, yet their lives rarely overlap. However, within PARALLEL PLANES, Karam suggests that, once a straight line is just slightly angled, it can eventually lead to exciting and unexpected interactions. Photographs of brick edges, wire fences, and cement walls merge, overlap, and converge in a succession of patterns. These textured surfaces are combined with slivers of vivid color, spray painted onto edges of the prints, adding additional layers to the compositions.

Edition of 9 handmade portfolio boxes (each unique) in 3 sizes and 3 color variations, containing 24 pigment prints with an image size that remains constant as the overall print size increases.
The photographs are documentations of the geometric street interventions the artist has painted and placed onto corners of walls and buildings around New York City, emphasizing the lines where two spatial planes come together.
